About Us
We believe Penvith Barns is in the forefront of a revolution in the way Bed and Breakfast businesses are run. We offer quality en-suite bedrooms that have been finished and equiped to the highest standard, decorated in sympathy with the Barns and their surroundings. If you fancy an evening in, we have a large dvd library available for you to help yourself. There is no question of curfew times or any such nonsense. Once you have checked in, you will have a front door key and can come and go as you please. If the thought of a free and easy few days appeals, send me an email to make a reservation, or phone me on 01503 240772.
I love planning my breakfast menu’s every day, using locally produced ingredients wherever possible, choosing whatever is delicious and in season. My “Full Cornish” is always available along with another savoury dish for those of you with a smaller appetite. If like me you need a sugar hit to get you started – there is always the sweet option and I love trying out new muffin recipes or fruit dishes that I haven’t made before. I bake fresh bread rolls every morning and if you are a caffeine junkie there is even cappuccino and espresso coffee on the list. And breakfast is a great time to compare notes with other guests, to find out what is happening, and to make sure you really get the most out of this fabulous part of the world. I’m always ready to help you to make the most of your stay.
Penvith Barns were built in the 19th Century, on a much older site. We discovered one amazing historical feature when we changed the old laundry room in the spring of 2004. Through a new plate glass floor you can see the walls forming part of a 13th Century wheel-pit. Down there somewhere is also a tunnel used by smugglers in the 17th Century. The tunnel is yet to be excavated but it is on our “to do” list! (Click here to read about the history of Penvith and the Lost Tunnel)
Penvith is set glorious countryside, but within easy reach of all the interesting places to visit. The world renowned Monkey Sanctuary and the stunning Coastal Path are a 10 minute walk from our door. Looe and Polperro (also known for its smugglers) and the Eden Project are all within easy reach. We are 18 miles from Plymouth with its modern shopping area, historical Barbican and the National Marine Aquarium. There is plenty to do to keep you amused, even if the weather is unkind.(Click here for a list of attractions and links)
I have extensive
grounds where you can breakfast on a hot sunny day, looking across to Looe and
the sea beyond. We have prize winning, Pedigree Alpacas here, who are tame enough to hand feed, with ten babies (cria) due this summer. My
tame sheep love to be fed sheep cake by the guests, so feel free to indulge
them. They get very fat in the summer. You will probably see the buzzards that
hover above our fields, and swallows and other small birds of many types nest in the eves of the
barns. Our hot tub probably has one of the best views in Cornwall – perched in our picnic meadow, it looks over the roof of the Barns as far as the sea at Looe and the hills of St Austell Moor 25 miles away. At night, the stars are infinite, and the bats fly over to say hello!
To make a reservation, or for any enquiries phone me on 01503 240772 (overseas +44 1503 240772) or send me an email.
